The Supplication that Fulfills All Wishes
When everything goes wrong and there are no longer any points of reference; when we find ourselves in complete confusion, in doubt; when we are totally overwhelmed by suffering… it is often difficult to maintain the View of Great Perfection, according to which all phenomena, all experiences, are the ornaments of the primordial knowledge’s natural display, the radiance of the illusory forms of the great universal compassion. Whether or not we are on a spiritual path, we tend to want to throw everything away or curl up in a little hole and wait for the suffering to pass. And that is completely normal. It is part of the training, and training, like life in general, is not easy. Some would call this the cyclical wandering, saṃsāra (Tib. ‘khor ba, pronounced khorwa).
“So when everything is difficult, when everything seems too overwhelming, we need to have a refuge to shelter under without cutting ourselves off from reality.”
Lobsang Dargye Gyamtso Rinpoche, aka Alags Chörten – April 2014
So when everything is difficult, when everything seems too overwhelming, we need to have a refuge to shelter under without cutting ourselves off from reality. In the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition, to help us overcome difficulties and obstacles of the mind, we are reminded of our connection to the Master, who is none other than the primordial nature of our mind. We also remember the fundamentals of the path, beginning with the foundation of Mahāyana, the Great Vehicle, if the Direct View of the Great Perfection cannot be present. There are several types of support to remind us of the fundamentals, such as the reminder of refuge or prayers of wishes or good omens, etc. Years ago, my Master, Lobsang Dargye Gyamtso Rinpoche, left us a prayer to inspire us in difficult times. Entitled “The Supplication that Fulfills All Wishes in Accordance with Dharma,” it is as follows:
Gang la tèn na nam lang lu mé pa// la ma chog sum gyèl wa sé dang ché//
Wherever we are we rely on the infallible sunrise. In the same way, we implore the Lama, the Three Jewels,
yé shé chèn dèn sung mé tshog nam la// söl wa dèb so sam dön drub par dzö//
the Victorious Ones and their sons [1], as well as the Protectors endowed with the eye of wisdom. Help us to accomplish all our wishes!

May all those who are engaged in Dharma through listening, reflecting and meditating,
go sum nam kar ja wa ma lü pa// gang sam yi mön tar dün drub gyur né//
who are to perform only beneficial activities by the means of the three gates [2], fulfill their aspirations in accordance with this prayer.

(Lama), please bestow your blessing and accomplishments!

Dispel all outer and inner obstacles of the three spheres, [3]

curses, negative forces, epidemics, untimely death, as well as obstacles, adverse conditions and the eight great fears. [4]

May we swiftly attain Nirvana without remainder! [5]

With an authentic teacher and Dharma companions [6]

far away from ordinary society and without having to worry about food, clothing and bedding, we implore you to continually bless us with the spontaneous Dharma!
tsül trim nam dag dé tsön drag po yi// do ngag shung ki gong dön lèg tsèl né//
With totally pure ethics, fervent faith and diligence, may we perfectly train in the profound meaning of the Sutras and Tantras,
nyam su lang wé sa lam yön tèn kün// yong dzog kha nyam dro wé gön gyur shog//
develop all qualities of the paths and grounds [7] through practice and become the protectors of all beings equal in number to the vastness of the sky!
This was composed by Lobsang Dargye Gyamtso, or Padma Thötrengsel, (the one coming from a land of) water, yaks and goats.
May this prayer, the foundation of the gradual path, be useful to as many people as possible during difficult times and conditions.
