Introduction

This radical Dzogchen text belongs to the category of teachings known as the “mind series” (in Tibetan, semdé). It is cited in the various lists of the “Eighteen Translations of the Semdé”, with the exception of the list by Nyangrel Nyima Özer (12th c.).

Along with “The Pure and Perfect Spirit”, “Light of the Three Dimensions of Existence”, The Sublime Monarch and the “All-Encompassing One”, this texte is one of the “four [so-called] minor teachings” that were taught by Shri Singha to Bairotsana immediately after the transmission of the “five ancient translations”.

We hope that reading this text will be profitable and enlightening for you, but we would like to stress the crucial importance of a direct oral transmission of this text by a teacher who has realized it. In this way, the wisdom breath that this text conveys will reach you fully.

You who wish to liberate yourself in the midst of natural evidence,

The Perfection that cuts through everything

Homage to the transcendent Victorious One, the matrix space of great perfect bliss!

The pure and perfect mind, the All-Excellent [1],

Is completely unrelated to the concepts of self and others.

Thus it is the state of spontaneous perfection

Where no phenomenon changes, is born or dies.

As it is pure, it is also supreme nectar.

As it is immutable and clear, it is like gold.

It binds together good and evil

Delivering them in total freedom: ha!

Those who do not recognize it

Pursue empty words.

Still grasping the partiality of good and evil,

Thus they wander in aimless blindness: ha!

There is no sun more immaculate than it,

No darkness darker than it,

In its luminous sphere of peace

There is no deity [2] superior to it.

How boundless is its expansion,

It is the very oneness of all things.

In its sovereign manifestation, which is like the sky,

There is neither ordinary being nor perfect enlightenment,

There is neither primordial evidence nor the plenitude of pure enlightenment,

There is neither decrease nor increase.

As it is the bliss of the luminous sphere of the three times

It neither benefits nor harms anyone.

As a totally pure quintessence,

It is obviously spontaneously accomplished: ha!

Not appearing, it is without variation,

As it is beyond methods and higher knowledge,

It has no path, it has no enlightenment,

It rises as the quintessence of non-existence: ha!

Therefore, integrate the enlightened presence that teaches

For the benefit of fortunate beings to come.

Being assured of its reality,

All that you experience is born without concept.

This authentic and certain teaching,

You who wish to liberate yourself in the midst of natural evidence,

Keep it in the depths of your mind.

So don’t spread it to just anyone.

Thus ends “The Perfection that cuts everything”.
