The English word \u201cphenomena\u201d (phenomenon)<\/span> translate<\/span>s several Tibetan terms with complementary connotations. A phenomenon is that which appears to a consciousness (Tib.<\/span> nang wa\/snang ba<\/span>). Without the<\/span> mind, there is no phenomenon, because otherwise nothing is known\u2014even the idea of something unknowable by the mind remains a mental phenomenon for the mind. This latter term emcopasses sensory consciousness and mental consciousness: the knowing and known aspects are mutually dependent,<\/span> as shown<\/span> by the term \u201cyul tchen\u201d, which literally means \u2018possessor of an object\u2019, wh<\/span>ere an object (yul) is defined as \u201cthat which is known by consciousness\u201d. Phenomena are effectively everything that can be experienced through the six consciousnesses. Thus<\/span>, they constitute the fundamental elements of reality (skt. Dharma, tib. ch\u00f6s) : they hold (Skt. dhar) their own characteristics. Finally, the Dzogchen approach can be described as phenomenological, because it makes phenomena the gateway to their primordial nature (Skt. dharmata, Tib. ch\u00f6nyi\/chos nyid<\/span>), or the \u201cReality of phenomena\u201d. From this perspective, phenomena are the ornaments<\/span> (Tib. gy\u00e4n\/rgyan<\/span>) of sovereign manifestation (Tib. thugdj\u00e9\/thugs rje<\/span>). Depending on whether or not they are recognized in their nature, they appear as \u201cpure\u201d (ornaments of compassion) or \u201cimpure\u201d (conditioned factors).
