Durant l’\u00e9pid\u00e9mie de Covid beaucoup d’entre nous ont exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 les r\u00e9unions en ligne. Passer des heures devant son \u00e9cran pour travailler, mais aussi pour s’amuser, en famille ou entre amis. La digitalisation croissante de nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9s n’est plus \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer, qu’on la souhaite ou qu’on la d\u00e9plore. De ces exp\u00e9riences r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es de discussions digitales une petite r\u00e9flexion a surgit. Regardant mon \u00e9cran, je me disais que malgr\u00e9 toutes les critiques \u00e0 \u00e9mettre envers ce type de communication num\u00e9rique et ce qui les rend possible (et elles sont nombreuses !), ces outils tr\u00e8s pratiques pouvaient nous donner \u00e0 faire l’exp\u00e9rience d’une \u00e9trange forme de r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Mais plus encore, en retour, et bien malgr\u00e9 eux, ils pouvaient nous donner \u00e0 voir la n\u00f4tre de r\u00e9alit\u00e9, celle habituelle, ordinaire – physique, tangible, mat\u00e9rielle, sensible et bien solide, la seule vraie, l’authentique – sous un tout autre angle, sous un jour nouveau, insoup\u00e7onn\u00e9 jusque l\u00e0… Ambivalence des \u00e9crans.<\/p>\n

Car, tout le monde en conviendra, devant son \u00e9cran on peut \u00eatre stress\u00e9, enjou\u00e9, attrist\u00e9 : de devoir faire telle ou telle pr\u00e9sentation pour son travail, de voir ses enfants, sa famille ou son conjoint, d’apprendre la mort d’un proche, pour ne pas m\u00eame \u00e9voquer les enterrements en ligne ou, plus joyeusement, de tomber amoureux ! En un mot, il y a beaucoup d’\u00e9motions qui passent par l\u00e0, comme dans la vraie vie, comme \u00ab en pr\u00e9sentiel \u00bb – l’autre n’\u00e9tant faite que de bits convertis en pixels sur un \u00e9cran, et produisant des data. Donc toutes ces \u00e9motions, toutes ces pens\u00e9es et m\u00eame ces sensations ressenties devant son \u00e9cran, seraient-elles moins r\u00e9elles que celles provenant d’une interaction \u00ab physique \u00bb ?<\/p>\n

Comment peut-on \u00e0 ce point \u00eatre capt\u00e9 par nos \u00e9motions devant de simples pixels sur un \u00e9cran ? Quelle simulation r\u00e9ussie ! Nous y sommes comme avec d’autres, en relation. Bien s\u00fbr il manque les informations provenant de certains sens, toucher et odorat en particulier. Mais beaucoup de choses sont ressenties. On y communique presque comme en vrai. Et pourtant, il s’agit bien d’un enchantement, d’une illusion magique apparaissant mais n’existant pas vraiment. Un vrai tour de magie !<\/p>\n

Ainsi, toutes ces analogies peuvent nous aider, en retour, \u00e0 questionner le statut m\u00eame de notre r\u00e9elle-r\u00e9alit\u00e9-bien-r\u00e9elle, l’authentique-assur\u00e9e-s\u00fbre-et-certaine.<\/p>\n

Non pas dans le sens o\u00f9 ils seraient tous deux r\u00e9ellement-r\u00e9els, mais dans le sens inverse… Qu’ils pourraient tous deux \u00eatre une simulation, un trucage, une illusion magique !<\/p>\n

Ainsi, ne sommes-nous pas \u00e9galement immerg\u00e9s, hors de nos \u00e9crans, dans une gigantesque projection, une illusion parfaitement \u00e9labor\u00e9e, une sorte de r\u00eave vivant permanent ? La r\u00e9alit\u00e9 n’est-elle pas le plus grand \u00e9cran qui soit, la simulation totale ? Sans doute r\u00e9elle car apparente, et pourtant, peut-\u00eatre, illusoire…<\/p>\n

The screen within the screen<\/b><\/span><\/p>

During the Covid epidemic many of us experienced online meetings. Spending hours in front of our screens to work, but not only! Also having fun, with family or friends.<\/span><\/p>

Despite all the criticisms to be made towards the digitization of our lives through these tools, they give us the opportunity to experience a strange form of reality. But even more, they provide us <\/span><\/span>in return <\/i><\/span><\/span>with the possibility to see our reality <\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/b><\/span><\/span> the ordinary one, the only true and authentic one: physical, tangible and quite solid \u2013 from a totally different angle, under a bright new light, unsuspected until now\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In front of our screens, we may feel stressed, happy or sad: having to make such or such presentation for work, meeting our children, our family or partner, not to mention online funerals, or more joyfully, falling in love! In a word, there are a lot of emotions that go on through there, as \u201cIRL\u201d, as \u201cin-person\u201d. But are all these emotions, thoughts and even sensations <\/span><\/span>less real<\/i><\/span><\/span> than those coming from a \"physical\" interaction? <\/span><\/span><\/p>

How can we be so captivated by our emotions in front of simple pixels on a screen, by this reality created from scratch? Let\u2019s take a look at ourselves in the subway! What a successful simulation! One communicates there <\/span><\/span>almost<\/i><\/span><\/span> as ''in real''. And yet, it is indeed an enchantment, a magical display appearing but not really existing. Through our eyes, we are running towards a reality that, in a sense, <\/span><\/span>is not<\/i><\/span><\/span>. We are completely caught up in the excitement that it arouses. A real magic trick!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

An ancient Greek tradition already spoke of a dark cave in which humans would be immersed, looking at the shadows projected on the walls we take for reality. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

But more than this, in return, these analogies lead us to question the very status of our really-real-reality, of what we take for the one-and-only authentic reality!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

My husband on screen and my husband ''in real''; how can I be sure they are so completely different? Not in the sense of being both really-real, but the other way around\u2026 That they both might be a simulation, a trick, a magical illusion! <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Thus aren\u2019t we also immersed, off-screen, into a gigantic projection, a perfect crafted illusion, a kind of ongoing vivid dream? Is not reality the biggest screen ever, the total simulation?
