Alors que j\u2019allais mordre \u00e0 pleine dent dans mon croissant (au beurre), ma m\u00e8re dit : \u201cQue penses-tu de la mort ?\u201d<\/p>\n

Je m\u2019arr\u00eatai net, la bouche grande ouverte.<\/p>\n

Je finis par refermer celle-ci et reposai la viennoiserie dans l\u2019assiette, quelque peu d\u00e9sar\u00e7onn\u00e9, pas tant par la question mais par le fait que ma m\u00e8re est morte depuis vingt ans.<\/p>\n

R\u00e9capitulons. Petit d\u00e9jeuner dominical, les pieds nus dans l\u2019herbe, le soleil frappant de ses rayons obliques le haut de mon cr\u00e2ne, le merle du prunier toujours sur ses vocalises, un chat \u00e0 pas de loup qui chasse le campagnol \u00e0 vingt m\u00e8tres de la table de jardin o\u00f9, attabl\u00e9 depuis quelques minutes \u00e0 peine avec un th\u00e9 oolong bio du Yunnan et une corbeille de fruits, je vais gaiement entamer la journ\u00e9e – mis de c\u00f4t\u00e9 le temps de pratique que je m\u2019octroie chaque matin au lever.<\/p>\n

Si la mort est bien le corps sans vie que j\u2019ai vu par\u00e9 de ses plus beaux atours il y a vingt ans, dans un cercueil – et les autres que j\u2019ai vus depuis – alors comment un souvenir peut-il ainsi me couper dans mon \u00e9lan matinal (mais pas trop) de d\u00e9vorer mon croissant ?

\u201cPr\u00e9sentement, cela me parait assez rh\u00e9torique, comme question\u201d m\u2019entends-je dire. Si je suis capable d\u2019avoir un \u00e9change avec ce qui est cens\u00e9 avoir disparu il y a deux d\u00e9cennies, c\u2019est soit qu\u2019une l\u00e9g\u00e8re brise de folie souffle ce matin, soit que je dois r\u00e9viser mon jugement sur la mort – la fin, la disparition, l\u2019annihilation d\u00e9finitive peut-\u00eatre, certes, mais de quoi ?<\/p>\n

Quelle est la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de la forme de ma m\u00e8re que je projette en face de moi, versus celle de ma compagne qui, adoss\u00e9e \u00e0 sa chaise, grignote du bout des dents une fraise ? Si je peux prendre pour r\u00e9el un souvenir, quelle r\u00e9alit\u00e9 poss\u00e8de ce que je consid\u00e8re comme existant – ma femme perdue dans ses pens\u00e9es – car je le per\u00e7ois avec mes sens ? Ne serais-je pas en train de me faire avoir ?

Une sensation d\u00e9routante, un peu d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able, m\u2019envahit et je me tortille sur ma chaise. Quelle est l\u2019arnaque ?<\/p>\n

Je mords dans mon croissant, m\u00e2che lentement, d\u00e9glutis, et finis par l\u00e2cher au fant\u00f4me, en r\u00e9ponses \u00e0 ses questions :<\/p>\n

A cet instant, le chat bondit sur sa proie, le merle se tait. \u201cTu disais ?\u201d demande la femme \u00e0 mes c\u00f4t\u00e9s, sortant de sa r\u00eaverie.<\/p>\n

\u201cJe ferai bien de me poser les bonnes questions\u201d me dis-je par-devers moi. \u201c\u2019Et de retourner m\u2019asseoir un moment\u201d.<\/p>\n
